Do you want to learn how to sew a simple tunic, dress, shirt or sark?
Do you want to make a handsewn body garment, but you need more help than just a booklet with instructions?
- Maybe you find it too expensive to buy a tunic made by someone else?
- You may never have sewn anything by hand in your life?
- Or you have some experience but find it hard to make a pattern that really fits you?
Then this course is for you!
The same type of simple tunic or dress was the typical basic garment for a person of any gender, any class and anywhere in North and West Europe + Viking settlements in other places, at least from the 800s to the 1200s. The same type of pattern was used for undergarments like shirts and sarks, and for tunics and dresses worn in layers over them. Only the length and details differed.

The course will be released April 10. Until then you can pre-order it for a reduced price – EUR 40 instead of EUR 50.

We will go through:
- What we know and don’t know about tunics, shirts, dresses and sarks from the Viking age and early medieval period (about 700-1300)
- How to find out what type of tunic you should make to create a good impression
- How to choose the right fabric
- Which tools and materials you will need
- How to take your personal measurements
- How to translate those measurements to a pattern for a simple body garment
- How to position the pattern pieces on the fabric and cut out
- How to sew durable and good looking seams the contemporary way
- How to sew tricky details like the ends of slits and gores
- How to put your garment together, seam by seam
- How to take care of your finished garment
When you have finished the training you will have a new handsewn garment that you can be proud of, a pattern that you can reuse and adapt and competence in sewing with contemporary techniques that you can use for other garments too.
The Teacher
Susanna Broomé has more than 30 years of experience in making patterns for and sewing garments for Viking age reenactment. She is the author of a well-known set of booklets with patterns and instructions for Viking age clothing based on archaeological finds.
Susanna has spent a large part of her free time during these more than 30 years with studying archaeological litterature and finds to learn more about how the Vikings and their neighbours dressed and how their garments and textiles were made.
Susanna lives in Gothenburg, Sweden and is by profession an IT process and project management specialist with a university education in mathematics and computer science. In her day-to-day job an important part has always been to develop and conduct courses, both in the classroom and online. She has over the years got a lot of very positive feedback about how she presents her subjects so that the participants understand and learn.
