In Hedeby remains of a hat has been found that is of a type that is much more ordinary than the caps from the British Isles. The Hedeby hat is a typical pillbox hat of the same type which was frequently used during the later medieval times (among others, several have been found in Herjolfsnes in Greenland) and on the continent during the Viking age (e.g. several finds from the Netherlands). The Hedeby hat has, just as several other finds from the Viking age, a pile on the inside to make it warmer. As usual when it comes to finds that are not from graves, we don’t know if it belonged to a man or a woman. Based on the finds from the Netherlands there are several possible ways to recreate the hat. You can see two of the to the right.
