Proto Animal Head Brooch

75.30

Proto animal head brooches are maybe the most beautiful of the Scandinavian paired brooches. They were probably used for holding up the typical female garment from the Vendel period, the peplos. This high quality reproduction looks as close to the original as you can get.

Description

Reproduction of a typical Vendel period proto animal head brooch from Präståker in Stenkyrka, Gotland, Sweden. The original is dated to the end of the 500s. Proto animal head brooches are the Vendel period ancestors of what became the Gotlandic animal head brooches from the Viking period. They were most often used in pairs, maybe to hold up a peplos.
